Senate President Hun Sen Pays Tribute to the Late Mr. Nguyen Phu Trong

Phnom Penh: In a solemn ceremony held this morning, July 25, 2025, in the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Senate President Hun Sen and President of the Cambodian People's Party, paid tribute to the late Mr. Nguyen Phu Trong. The former General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam passed away on July 19, 2024, at the age of 80.

During the national memorial service at the National Cemetery, Senate President Hun Sen, along with other dignitaries, presented a wreath and lit incense in honor of Mr. Nguyen Phu Trong. This ceremony marks a significant moment as Senate President Hun Sen is the first foreign dignitary to pay respects following the passing of the General Secretary.

Mr. Nguyen Phu Trong was a prominent figure in Vietnamese politics, known for his dedication to Marxism-Leninism and his significant contributions to the Communist Party of Vietnam. Born in 1944 in Dong Hoi commune, Dong Anh district, Hanoi, Mr. Nguyen Phu Trong rose from humble beginnings to become a leading political figure. His extensive career included roles such as editor-in-chief of the Communist Review, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee in Hanoi, Secretary of the Party Committee in Hanoi, President of the National Assembly, and Secretary General of the Communist Party of Vietnam, among others.

His leadership and influence extended across various facets of Vietnamese political and ideological spheres, making him a revered figure in the nation's history.

Senate President Hun Sen and his delegation are expected to return to Phnom Penh, Kingdom of Cambodia, on the afternoon of July 26, 2024.
